Students for Law and Social Justice (SLSJ) is a South African students organization formed in 2007 dedicated to protecting human rights, preventing discrimination and promoting social justice and the rule of law. It is a society formed in partnership between students of the various universities of South Africa and it is within SLSJ that we aim to transform legal education and access to justice.
We are an organization run solely by students and we are not politically affiliated. We have the student capacity to take on the practical work that would need to be done. This includes aiding schools in enhancing their facilities, offering a means through which community members are able to gain access to justice in a society where this is a major issue and providing a platform for law students to actively. participate in facilitating justice in South Africa.
The law faculty of the University of the Western Cape has welcomed SLSJ as both the institution and the organization advocate the same cause. UWC SLSJ provides a platform for law students to take part in programmes which are development centered and value orientated. The importance of law students taking part in our extra-mural activities is stressed as they affirm direction and inspire purpose. Not only do we educate and empower communities with our initiatives, we open doors to various opportunities for our law students who choose to walk the path paved by SLSJ. As an organization we understand that It is essential to network and build relationships with firms and organizations while you are still studying. The insight gained and exposure obtained will only further opportunity.
